7 EZ Tips to Help you Quit Smoking: The Great American Smoke Out 2022

Every year, the third Thursday of November is the Great American Smoke Out, a time to encourage smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. Quitting smoking is a journey, so EZhealthcarejobs.com made this quick list of steps to help you get started!

Step 1: Notice when you feel the urge to smoke

What is happening around you? What are you feeling? This may seem like a silly step, but it’s crucial. Noticing these things will help you understand the pattern of your behavior. Oftentimes, when people use cigarettes (or other habits) to cope, there is something that they are getting from the experience. Paying attention and identifying what draws you to smoke is the first step to freeing yourself from the habit.

Step 2: Dig deeper into these feelings

Once you have an idea about what makes you want to smoke, you can start to find healthier ways to address these difficult emotions or circumstances.

Step 3: Reduce your use

Some people can drop a bad habit cold turkey and some cannot. There’s nothing wrong with starting small. Maybe cut out 1 cigarette a day for a week and see how you feel. Then the next week, reduce your habit by 2 cigarettes a day.

Step 4: Be kind to yourself

Quitting smoking isn’t easy. You may have days that are harder than others, and you may not always be able to meet your reduction goal. It’s okay. Know that recovery is a journey and trust yourself to do better tomorrow.

Step 5: Celebrate your progress

Even something that feels small, like cutting out a cigarette a day, is a big deal. Even simply considering reducing the amount you smoke is cause for celebration.

Step 6: Remember that you are not alone

Millions of Americans smoke cigarettes, so chances are you aren’t the only person trying to cut down. You can share your experience with friends or loved ones, find support groups, and other resources that can help you along the way.

Step 7: Ask for help

This step can be very uncomfortable. The thought of asking for help is something many people fear. Of course, this step comes with risks. Perhaps someone you reach out to can’t help you or makes you feel unheard and alone. It can be painful. But the more you reach out, the more likely you are to meet like-minded people who can support you along the way. And who knows, maybe your courage will shine a light and help others who are struggling.
